The genius of the famous Italian designer Mario Bellini first emerged in 1963, when he started working as chief design consultant for the well-known company Olivetti. Among his most iconic designs are the 'Programma 101', considered the first personal computer in history, and the 'Divisumma 18' electronic calculator. In 1972, Bellini made a major appearance at the MoMA in New York with the exhibition 'Italy. The New Domestic Landscape', where he presented the 'Kar-a-sutra', an automobile that revolutionised the concept of habitability. During the 1970s, he collaborated with some of the biggest Italian and European companies, such as Cassina, Flos and Vitra, demonstrating his ability to create timeless design elements.
In the 1980s, Bellini concentrated increasingly on architectural design, creating extraordinary buildings such as the Exhibition and Congress Centre at Villa Erba Park in Cernobbio, the Tokyo Design Centre and the New Pavilions of the Milan Trade Fair at Portello. His brilliant career earned him numerous prizes and awards, including the Compasso d'Oro in 1979 for the '101 Programme' and the nomination as 'Designer of the Decade' in 1980 by the Museum of Decorative Arts in Montreal. To this day, Mario Bellini continues to make his mark in the world of design and architecture, maintaining his studio in Milan and working with the world's largest companies.
